Does a Twin-Size Bed Fit in a Van?

3 min read

Most van conversion vehicles have enough space to house a twin-size bed. Examples include the Ford Transit Connect XLT, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, and the VW Bus.  However, this depends on how you would like to place it. Twin-size beds can fit in most vans length-wise, but not all can fit crosswise.

This article will tell you everything you need to know. Keep on reading:

Dimensions of a twin-size bed

A twin-size bed is the smallest size that manufacturers typically produce. They measure about 38 inches (in width) by 75 inches (in length), with their height varying, anywhere from a few inches to over 10.

How big is the interior of a van?

Van interiors vary in size, so it’s important to consider how much room you’ll have after fitting your twin bed within it. Here are some rough estimates how big the interior of different vans are:

  • A compact cargo van has an interior space of 83 in x 48 in, with a height of 52 in
  • A cargo van has an interior space of 126 in x 55 in, with a height of 65 in
  • Heavy duty cargo van has an interior space of 126 in x 55 in, with a height of 65 in

  • Honda Odyssey EX-L
  • Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
  • VW Bus
  • VW California
  • Toyota Sienna XLE
  • Nissan Quest SL

Does a twin-size bed fit crosswise?

Yes, a twin-size bed will fit crosswise in most vans. This position is ideal if you’d like to place the bed against the back doors to maximize interior space.

Here are vans that can fit a twin-size bed, crosswise:

  • Ram Pro Master
  • Mercedez-Benz Sprinter
  • Nissan NV

Here are some that will need some modifications to accommodate a twin bed, in a crosswise position:

  • Ford Transit Connect XLT

Does a twin bed fit lengthwise in a van?

A twin-size bed will fit in most vans, given that there is no furniture or seating the way. This positioning is ideal if you’d like to create two separate sleeping areas, as you can place two beds on the separate walls of the vehicle.

Can you fit two twin-size beds side-by-side?

Fitting two twin-size beds won’t be such a hassle because a van’s interior space is sufficient. A van can even accommodate a queen size bed inside if you organize it properly. You can opt to put two twin size beds side by side for you and a partner.

You can even create two separate sleeping areas, by placing two beds on the separate walls of the vehicle. This is perfect if you’re traveling with friends or a sibling.

How to fit a twin-size bed into a van

Preparing your vehicle to transform it into a campervan is fairly easy. If you’re starting from scratch:

  1. Remove any seating
  2. Clean the interior of your van
  3. Create a stand for your bed, as needed

I recommend bringing the twin-size bed through the back doors of your van, as it will be easier to navigate. It might be better to buy a rolled up mattress and open it within your van. These type of beds are usually vacuumed-packed into plastic packaging, making them easier to move around.

If the mattress is too heavy for you to carry, ask a friend to help you out.
